Memories of Back Home

For our Great Coffee, Great Books book club selection this month we're reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato-Peel Pie Society. I began reading it yesterday and fell so deeply in love that I made it half way through the novel in an afternoon. Apart from the simple fact that reading letters is a quicker endeavor than reading a narrative story, the book struck a chord in me and I couldn't bear to put it down until I was falling fast asleep.

My family's lived here in America for nearly 400 years, and though they were English when they came here, we've not kept any ties to whatever distant family there may still be out there across the sea. But it's not the blood-connection to the English that's resonating with me. It's the story telling. The characters in Guernsey remind me so deeply of my family, and the way they tell a story; such that I want to hear every single detail. I want to hear how Elizabeth McKenna slapped Adelaide Addison across the face in the church, how they rendered pig fat into soap and how the ladies cried over it, and what a loving reunion it was when the children returned from the countryside and young Eli learned how to whittle animals, even though wood was a scarce commodity. It's the little stories of their lives that intrigue me.

But Guernsey isn't the only book that has caught me up like this. I fell in love with Lake Wobegone Days by Garrison Keillor when I was a teen. The quiet humor and the subtle pathos of the people living their lives out there in rural Minnesota was yet another tie to those stories my parents told me about their lives growing up in small towns in Ohio and Kentucky. That got me to start listening to the Prairie Home Companion on NPR and making an evening of a Saturday night with knitting, hot tea and colorful stories on the radio. Moments like that just warm my heart.

Other books that captured that spirit of down home storytelling with a sense of humor were Ferrol Sams book Run with the Horsemen about a boy growing up in rural Georgia. I read Horsemen around the same time as I read Wobegone, and they both tapped that same chord with me. Similarly, David Sedaris's short stories in Barrel Fever and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim about his wacky family in South Carolina, while more contemporary also have that same evocative flavor. Though sad in their own way, the movies Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias also have that resonance. I'll never forget moments like those.

There's something about knowing the lives of the people around you, and the sheer joy that comes from hearing those tales. It's the best part of calling my mother, just to find out what's been going on in town and who got hit by a tractor, who's having a baby, who got mad at who in church, what did my cousins down by the river do now. Though I've been gone from there nigh on fifteen years, to hear my mother tell me those stories, it's like being right back there again. Sitting on the front porch swing, drinking sweet tea, waiting for grandma to make Sunday dinner after church and being there with the whole family. That's where these books take me. Right there.

Great Coffee, Great Books

Starting in February the Watha T. Daniel Library will be partnering with the Starbucks Coffee shop in Logan Circle to bring you an all new book club program outside of our library walls. Join us for Great Coffee, Great Books, a monthly book discussion group held at 7:00 p.m. on the final Wednesday of the month at Starbucks Coffee, 1429 P St NW.

Our book for February 24 will be The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

For 15-year-old Michael Berg, a chance meeting with an older woman leads to far more than he ever imagined. The woman in question is Hanna, and before long they embark on a passionate, clandestine love affair which leaves Michael both euphoric and confused. For Hanna is not all she seems. Years later, as a law student observing a trial in Germany, Michael is shocked to realize that the person in the dock is Hanna. The woman he had loved is a criminal. Much about her behaviour during the trial does not make sense. But then suddenly, and terribly, it does - Hanna is not only obliged to answer for a horrible crime, she is also desperately concealing an even deeper secret.

Another Country

Adult Book Club
Wednesday, June 18
7:00 p.m.

Tonight our Adult book club will be discussing James Baldwin's amazing reverie of a book, Another Country. The novel follows the stories of several New York City residents in the late 1950's, their lives, their loves, and the complexity of racial relations and sexual identity. Reading Another Country is like being in someone's dream. The narrative floats between the present condition of the person, then their thoughts lead them back into memories of the past that vividly illustrate how they got to where they are now. Sometimes tragic, sometimes loving, but always filled with emotion, Baldwin's style is absolutely amazing.

This book is recommended for people who like reading stories where the characters are the main focus, and also people who love language.

Next month: Revenge by Mary Morris

Gargantuan

Adult Book Club
4/30 7:00 p.m.

Due to the Emancipation Day holiday our adult book club evening had to be shifted to the end of the last wednesday of the month. This month's selection is "Gargantuan" by Maggie Estep.
Ruby's life is nothing if not complicated: she's spending a lot of her time worrying about a jocky named Attila Johnson; a good-hearted Teamster with a bad back; a neighbor who is suspicious of anything that moves; one very fat cat who craves raw meat; a missing FBI agent; an underused piano; a few fine horses--and the sure knowledge that somehow, somewhere there is a killer among them.
Personally I fell in love with Maggie Estep in the 90's when I saw her on the MTV slam poetry shows. I bought her first poetry album "No More Mister Nice Girl" more than once, because I wore out the tape so I bought the CD. Her voice and her vision of quirky New York life are just something that I couldn't help but love. Her poetry is raw, excessive, clever and unique, and this book is no different.

Young Adult Book Club: Today at 3:30

Kindred
by Octavia Butler
Doubleday, 1979

Kindred is the story of Dana, a modern African-American woman, who, for unknown reasons, is pulled through space and time back to the Maryland plantation where her family was held as slaves. Her purpose, to save the life of the master's son, who is in fact her very own ancestor.

Dana's journeys, and yes this happens more than once, are filled with danger, suffering, and difficult choices. By saving the life of this man who abuses and destroys her family is she condoning his behavior? If she doesn't bring her ancestors together she may cease to exist.

This is a thrilling and heartbreaking book, and there will be LOTS to talk about.

Our Young Adult book club meets on the third thursday of every month at 3:30.

Next month's book: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
